Art of the Title - True Detective

HBO's latest offering to the gritty, TV drama space has come in the form of True Detective. A bleak, desaturated detective show set in the wastelands of Louisiana. Like most HBO shows, there is an extraordinary level of detail to the world. The minutia of life in small town USA, 1995, is clear to see; from the drab, rain drenched clothing, to the blurred and browned crime scene images. Strangely, the minutia of any project can say an incredible amount about a world. Whether it is the title font of the credits, or the colour palette of title images, these small touches are what reinforce theme. The title sequence to True Detective echoes the same ideas as the show. They frame the world in steel petrol plants and silhouettes of strippers, with dark skylines and broken figures. Black Mirror - Season 2 Tonight 10pm (also Utopia)

A quick reminder about the new series of Charlie Brooker's brilliant Black Mirror starting tonight on Channel 4 at 10pm. This is a rare British gem, a twilight zone-esque drama exploring the strange world that we find ourselves in. Also check out Channel 4's "Utopia" if anyone gets the time. It's a refreshing and thoughtful journey into a strange land. Good to see that British TV still has promise. Even when these shows make mistakes, the quality of writing and confidence to explore interesting themes is commendable. They feel completely auteur-ed and uncompromised, not stopping to explain to the audience or reinforce points. Check both out for some superb
