Trailer - The Congress by Ari Folman

Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir was a beacon of hope in a dark world of animation. In 2008, he brought the horror stories of the Lebanon war to the screen in a stunning but stark animation. Folman is now back with another film, part animated, part live action, titled The Congress.

It's difficult to imagine how this will turn out, with a strange vibe of retro animation and pulpy sci-fi. But no matter what you expect, Folman seems to have a unique approach with both film and animation. My first reaction to this somewhat bewildering trailer was uncertainty, reminiscent of Leos Carax's Holy Motors, it doesn't quite play by the normal rules and one is left grasping for something to cling to. One thing is for sure though, no matter how it all turns out, there is a real excitement behind this mode of film making.
