Welcome to the New Designers 2013 Post With The Most Special Edition - a showcase of graduate work exhibited at New Designers 2013 at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London. New Designers is the UK's most important graduate design exhibition featuring 3,000 newly graduated designers and for four days CGAA graduates represented themselves and their course to exhibition visitors - potential employers and industry contacts among them.
But when all is said and done, the mise-en-scene of an exhibition stand is but a serving suggestion for the graduate work. The stand itself is the picture frame, not the painting, and so collected here in this special edition of the PWTM is a showcase of graduate work featured at New Designers 2013. In common with all PWTMs, you can access the graduates' blogs simply by clicking on their names. Happy browsing.

We always like to push the boat out a bit for our graduates at New Designers and ensure their show is a talking point. New Designers is a busy exhibition with loads to see and our challenge is always to find unique and memorable ways of encouraging visitors to engage with our graduates and their work.
In 2010, we got old-school and arty with screen-printed production drawings, and artists' easels - which just happened to win CG Arts & Animation the 'best in show' award!

In 2011, we went wild for 'allsorts' of wire-frames and created a memorable confection of meshes...
In 2012, we took three up-scaled zoetropes for a spin...
And for 2013, the course team designed and installed our very own Art Deco-themed cinema, complete with vintage seating, usherettes and popcorn. We wanted our stand to evoke the golden age of the silver screen when cutting-edge special effects were first wowing audiences in the likes of RKO's King Kong (1933) and Universal's celebrated creature features Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931). We wanted a bit of thirties' glamour and to link the cgi of our graduates with the movie magicians of the past.
Our stand proved hugely popular visitors - and with the New Designers judges too, because they awarded CG Arts & Animation our second 'Best Stand' award, which certainly made for an exciting night for our graduates, with VIP cocktail receptions, award ceremonies, bottles of champagne and photo shoots!

The Final Word...
"You can't connect the dots looking
forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that
the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something -
your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.
This approach has never let me down." Steve Jobs
Amazing and inspirational work as always, and a huge congratulations to all involved for the Best In Show award! I didn't realise you had popcorn and usherettes as well, fantastic...
ReplyDeleteAnd anything that ends with a Steve Jobs quote gets my vote :)
Your stand at New Designers looked really good and is well deserving of Best Stand Award, it was great to see it first hand, and to see all of these inspiring works on your "big screen".
