New UCA Gallery... ...in the Pentagon!?

Whilst I was in Chatham today I came across a bit of a strange sight, on the second floor of the Pentagon shopping center, surrounded by rather dreary looking abandoned shops, there was a large sign, happily emanating the UCA logo down at me, so I checked it out and it turned out to be a gallery for showcasing students work free of charge, you may even sell something. Apparently they opened last week, all you do is go in, tell them your a student and leave your details, they then email you with details of how to apply, the work stays up for two months before they replace it, although there may be a lot of competition as I think students from all campuses are entitled to apply.

The gallery features a whole host of workshops which seem a very reasonable price, most of them were priced at around £5 a session. The list included:
  • comic book strips
  • experimental still life drawing
  • Book Making
  • Tie Dying
  • Making Hats
There were more but I didn't write these down at the time. (slapping my palm against my forehead)

It features still work primarily but there is a space for animated work to be displayed. If anyone wants to go and have a schmooze, the opening is on Friday 5th from 4pm to 7pm, but you will need to go in and put your name down beforehand, you'll then get an invite via e-mail for yourself and a guest. . I wasn't sure if this was mentioned in the UCA website news-feed but I found nothing except for this scheme that ended in April of this year, which is much the same and as a bonus the article features a lovely picture of our own Bob Sparks.

I felt I should post this up as there doesn't seem to have been any mention of this on the website or any news letters and as the pentagon isn't exactly renowned for being a cultural hub I think the success of this venture falls into the hands of the students and word of mouth although I guess they'll announce it once they have the pictures from the opening and schools may get in on this scheme come term time. Spread the word about the workshops and Gallery to anyone you think might be interested and help this venture to thrive.

  1. yeh i heard about it and im a bit sceptical, just because of the place it is situated inside the pentagon.. despite pentagon being filled with high street shop, i dont see it as you say as a cultural hub.

Anyway good good if we could get the courses animations being shown there instead of individuals students. Of course the works shown would be selected by our tutors.

    show case of our course...

  2. That's what I was thinking, its positioning is both inspirational and unfortunate. If it succeeds it could lead to UCA playing an even more active role in the local community and an overall rejuvenation of the center but it could also just as easily be sabotaged by its location. I was wondering about ways in which we might show course animations myself, for instance what is their policy on showing ex students work in order to promote courses? Anyway I'll probably make an appearance there tomorrow so i'll ask a few more questions.

  3. I think the previous UCA popup gallery was almost exclusively grad animations Dave. I'd expect they would want a mix of both; are they only putting things up that people give to them or what?

  4. I'm really not sure right now. I know that if a student goes in and puts down their name and e-mail address they are sent an e-mail where you are given all of the details with which to apply, then at the end of the present two month period they will consider your work alongside the other applicants. I would imagine grad students work would be welcomed but this is a guess on my part, I showed no university ID, I just said I was a student and left my e-mail. Although maybe certain tutors may be able to wield their influence in order to get promotional material for courses and ex grads work on display.
