An adaptation of Susan Hill's ghost story of the same title. Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake, The Descent: Part 2), it looks like it could be quite a chilling film. I'm yet to read the book, and I'm told some of the trailer's content is additional, but as long as it's as creepy as the trailer I'll be looking forward to it.
The first teaser is below:
If you liked that then give the full trailer a watch too:
Could it be as eerie as the trailer's horrible toys or will it just be another disappointing adaptation? Give us your thoughts and we shall have to wait and see! :D

The theatrical production of Susan Hill's ghost story was genuinely hair-raising. I saw it a few years ago now, but it absolutely got under my skin. I enjoyed this trailer too (I think you've posted the teaser twice, Molly?) - who doesn't love those creepy wind-up monkeys? Stephen King wrote a great short story entitled 'The Monkey', which is about one of those malign toys that wreaks havoc and death.
ReplyDeleteOh - I finally watched Black Swan a few days back - thoroughly enjoyed it; it was like a Polanksi movie, though a couple of moments did threaten to make me giggle because the atmosphere was so over-wrought, but hey, if you're looking for dissertation fodder, what a great psycho-sexual movie - and talk about your monstrous mother figure! Nina's mother is up there with Lydia from The Birds in terms of 'needy and grasping'!
Also - watched Deathly Hallows P2 yesterday; it didn't disappoint, and it was genuinely ravishing to look at - and killer line from Mrs Weasely - "Not my daughter, you bitch!" I could have cheered. Not sure I understood everything in the story though, but Snape's arc was very satisfyingly played out. And I loved the fact in the final coda, when you see the three friends 'all grown-up', that they all looked so refreshing ordinary and, well, boring. So reliably British, somehow - that fact that Harry Potter - most powerful wizard in the world - looked rather like a geography teacher! Good job too...
I agree Phil, the theatrical production was hair-raising, I thought it was brilliant.
ReplyDeleteBugger sorry, I thought I'd fixed it yesterday but apparently not That should be the 40ish second teaser there now.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see the stage show! I'm planning on reading the book in the next couple of days, I could do with a good scare :D
Oh excellent! I really enjoyed it too, Nina just felt like she could shatter at any moment. Oh gosh, her mother was great, talk about added pressure :S
As for Deathly Hallows Part 2, I hadn't read the last books so I really enjoyed Snape's reveal at the end (it does help that Alan Rickman is such a great actor though). I don't know if it's just me, but I thought the snake was great. It's an amazing achievement because it's so horribly brutal, especially in the little boat house when it's attacking. I also agree about the ending. It was nice to see that after everything they've been through they're just normal people.
*I'm also pretty excited about going to Anifest and hearing from the people involved in making the gorgeous white dragon too :D *
I know this is off-topic, but I really find the new blog template very distracting. The typography doesn't do it for me either. Maybe something more somber would help focus on the threads rather than the flash. Maybe not everyone sees it this way, just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI quite like it. The black background means you're not focusing on anything other than the post and the flash of colour is quite a nice welcome. I don't like the idea of it being too sombre because it is meant to be quite a lively blog. Maybe if people don't like it though there's a middle ground somewhere?
ReplyDeleteBy somber I meant more elegant. And black is not really what you would use for a "lively" blog.
ReplyDeleteTrue enough. It's good at emphasising the colour though and black does tend to go with everything. What kind of ideas did you have colour scheme wise? You could always start a new post to get everyone's ideas going!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Molly. Constructive ideas are always welcome, Mr Lemarquis - you know that. It's good to have you back in the mix - you've been quiet for a while. As Molly observes, the 'flash' etc. doesn't scroll with the post, meaning that, essentially, the blog is largely neutral. You're the first voice to flag up some concerns re. the layout, so, yes, I would be interested to know if everyone else is just being polite, or if this is just one of those instances where 'you can't please all of the people all of the time'. Answers on a postcard please...
ReplyDeleteI would go into more neutral position, because I was thinking at the moment to change my blog looks by decreasing the contrast (I was using too much of total black, white and red). For a page I feel that it is the most important thing to see the content, not the background or lines around while at the same time it still has to look good. Of course it would take a lot of time to find the right idea and it is not that easy to make it well anyway. Top banner can be very evocative, because it should be something that you always recognize the page and it's commercials from, but everything else should not. On the other hand now it is very easy to find everything what I want on this page, so it is ok and it looks not that bad at all which is ok too, but I think there will be always something that will not fit for everybody.
