Audio & Movie Previewing / Export Problems in Premiere

Some of you may have been experiencing problems using Premiere.

A) No audio preview
B) No movie preview
C) Failed exports

Adobe packages work using 'Scratch Disks'. This process utilises the empty space on your hard drive to store preview or export data. On a network system such as the UCA the space is finite and therefore fills up quickly.

The fix

1) Download the 'Mapdrive' file below. Extract and save to your desktop.
2) Double click on the file. This will add a 'Temp' drive to 'My Computer'. This is a drive the course has for storage and render space.
3) Create a new folder on the temp drive and name it. Use your name.
4) Open premiere. Go to 'Project - Project Settings - Scratch Disks'
5) Set each of the directories to the new folder on the temp space.

  1. Dose this work for Final Cut pro as well. I used Final Cut because I found the interface easier to understand. I’m having problems exporting, it keeps crashing:-(

  2. Sorry Sam no it doesn't - This is a PC only file. Final Cut shouldn't have a problem.

See the technicians at the end of the corridor if you keep experiencing the same issues. They'll fix the problem.

  3. Hi Sam.

Unfortunately in Final Cut Pro, the scratch disk settings are automatically link to your network drive, and this will cause the program to crash as there is not enough space in your account and the transfer speed between the Mac to network is also slow.

However you can easily change it. On all DM Macs there is an application I put on there called 'Preferences Manager'. If you run it and then click on the only username in the list (yours) and press the Trash button. Don't worry - we are only trashing your FCP settings, no project files are affected.

Then next time when you run FCP, on loading it will ask out for your preferred project settings. At the bottom of this screen, it asks you to choose a location for the 'Primary Scratch Disk'. Just change this to anywhere on the hard drive, for example a folder on your Desktop. FCP will then no longer crash.

Annoying I know but once you do this, FCP then runs really fast and doesn't crash.

If you need more help, just give me a shout. I can easily email you snapshots of what you need to do to if you get stuck.
