The Best CG Magazine?

Recently I've been looking around for a new magazine to subscribe to, but the range is huge and it is difficult to know what magazine is best without actually hearing from the readers. So I thought I'd put the question to the CG community. What is the best magazine around, 3dWorld? 3dCreative? Etc etc. What do people read and find most useful?

  1. There is also '3D Artist' ; but I couldn't tell you which is best. Perhaps just buy some and see which you prefer, and which has the most Maya content etc.

  2. Maya content is always a dodgy one, 3D World certainly went through a phase a few months ago of almost boycotting Maya, to the point where I was contemplating cancelling my subscription. However things have improved recently, I believe that mags find it difficult to maintain a balance of articles, especially with Autodesk owning three of the biggies.

I very rarely buy a magazine these days for tutorials or assets, rather I look more for inspiration and current and future developments.

Jon's advice is pretty sound however bear in mind that if rely on one months edition to give you a pointer of the mags average content then you may either be selling them short, or indeed the opposite. Personally I would probably beg, steal, borrow various back issues and possibly find a quiet corner of your local newsagents and peruse all the choices. Don't forget that the library stocks 3D World so there is a free source of back issues, that and a copier card could save you a small fortune and enable you to subscribe to another.

As an aside iirc 3D World and 3D Artist are from the same publishers, and generally have a similiar but different content 3D Artist seems to be slightly more illustrative based, that may have changed recently however.

  3. I believe the Uni library has some CG mags (at least they had some in my days.. 3D World and Digital Artist?) so just head on up and take a look on a few issues and see if they're to you're liking.

Not that big on mags really but I prefer 3DTotals magazine "3DCreative" myself. But it's only available in digital form which can be quite a deal-breaker for some. (Way cheaper then the others though..)
