On behalf of my coursemates, WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF COMPUTERS for the continuasion of the final 3D scene! Most of them are locked or rendering which makes it hard for them to finish their work on time. Can anybody help with this situation??? :(
BA Hons Computer Animation Arts is a 3 year degree course at the University for the Creative Arts, Rochester, UK.
Use the computers in DM3 if they're available. Other than that, there's not much more that can be suggested. As I posted a week or so ago, this time of year is ALWAYS like this.

Basically, the pain you're going through now is one we've all experienced on the course before! :(
ReplyDeleteCome in very early and stay ALL day is my suggestion.
Yeah, everyone experiences it. Tom I'm sure, will remember when I had a huge rage out and a rant last year about it when it was about to threaten the project I was working on. It's a tough time, just keep your calm and speak to Phil or Alan in person to get it resolved.
ReplyDeleteThe Dm3 is busy at the moment...but yeah maybe we should have a huge discussion about this issue which is really not convenient especially at a time like this.
ReplyDeletehas the uni not got the render farm up and running yet then? its been a while since we got the first one but it didn't work when we got it did it?
ReplyDeleteThe situation with the 'dead' computers in the CG Arts baseroom is unacceptable - and both Alan and I are acutely aware of the shortfall - and the pressures this is adding to your workload/time management. Your tutors have logged the problem with IT services and management - and did so immediately after the problem was acknowledged (first day back from Christmas). I have now emailed to further emphasise the problem and will be seeking clarification on the situation and ways in which it might be resolved quickly. In the meantime, Tom is correct; you'll need to manage around the situation; certainly - and this reflects on you lot - any student in week 15 breezing into the baseroom will be out of luck. And - of course - while I acknowledge the very real issue with the computers - there will be those amongst you who have left work to the last minute and so have a much lower threshold for managing any eleventh hour crises. You need to stay calm, negotiate access - and learn to use the margins of the working day - as Tom said - come early - stay late. That said, the second years have their crit on Thursday, which means any Uni-based rendering of second year projects MUST be completed by the end of Wednesday - and the baseroom etc will certainly be less populated on Thursday, because the 2nd years will be with us in their crit. It's hardly an ideal situation (it rarely is) but managing effectively, is, I'm afraid, your only option at this stage. I'll keep you informed regarding the situation as and when I have some clarification.
ReplyDelete@ 'Feigned Existence' - thanks for your input, Nathan - but perhaps the gratuitous needling of an interrupted student is not quite the constructive commentary moments like these are likely to benefit from? Reminds me of that old adage - "If you haven't got anything nice to say..."
ReplyDelete@ Andriana - your pain has been noted :D This situation is the same on the fashion courses (access to sewing machines), on applied arts (access to kilns), on photography (access to cameras) and so on. I'm not suggesting you shouldn't feel some frustration over resourcing, but I am asking you to consider the inevitability of it; this situation is true of any 'crunch time' at any University. What you need to get better at is preempting and anticipating it. Meanwhile, the 'big discussion' is ongoing between staff and IT etc and continues behind the scenes. In regard to any concerns re. resources etc. there are the official student forums etc. where students can put their concerns to constructive use. You also have student reps to take these matters forward for the community.
