These are some animations that really inspired me last year, I found myself wanting to know just how much one person can do for a project and so I had a look for some graduate projects on youtube. these were some of the best I found, most of them are fairly small, intimate projects with one definite exception.
Sorry, some of these videos are rather big for the blog page, all great though so hopefully that'll make up for it.
Big Buck Bunny
This is the exception, it was actually created by quite a large team on Blender, the same software that Sintel was made with.
Pidgeon Impossible
Theres some pretty good making of podcasts that go alongside with this, I think it took the guy (Simon Martel) about two years to make, the look on the pidgeons face at 4:53 is priceless.
Oktapodi
Over three years this animation consistantly won awards, bagging an academy award in 2009
Humans
I really like the style of this, short, sweet and to the point and you get to see cute little animals get decapitated.
Tree for Two
An eight month student project, the style of this animation is lovely, I really enjoyed this and it has a unique quality, it feels like it could be from the same universe as the Zelda series.
The Bendito Machine
Probably one of my favorites of the bunch. Its just a really enjoyable animation that has a style that seems so simple but its effective. Theres also some other Bendito Machine animations that have been made since this.
Get Out
I really enjoyed this, its humerous, its dark and its witty. I'm not exactly sure who voted it best film of 2009, I've been looking for a while yet to no avail but I like it.
And now for something a little different...
Gorrilaz Holograms and Madonna
Unfortunately the imbed code has been disabled for the MTV awards performance which actually precedes the Miku performance by 2 years. Felt I should post this in response as we brits very rarely get the drop on the Japs in these areas, just so you know Dimensional Studios did it first with the Musion Eyeliner in collaboration with the Gorrilaz and the music is actually good too. Seriously if I was stranded on a desert island and I had a choice between listening to Miku for 2 months or shooting myself in the face, I would seriously consider the second option.
ACDC vs Iron Man projection on Rochester Castle.
I cant remember for the life of me who showed me this, I just remember being suitably impressed by the ending. Its animation, its just projected on the front of Rochester Castle, they really didnt publicize this enough.
wow - a tsunami!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just saw that anyone could post and I watched so many shorts last year I had to post up a few. I wish I'd seen that show at the castle. Its not often that something so relevant to our course happens in Medway. Bendito Machine and Get Out are my favorites, but Pidgeon Impossible and Oktapodi are great too.
ReplyDeleteCould you edit your post to include labels for each animation and the tags 1-a-day, animation etc. - it just means when I come to re-jig the blog, I can order things into categories.
ReplyDeleteDone.
ReplyDeleteExcellent - and just to be really bloody annoying, could you lift the vitamin jar image from the original 1-a-day post and use it to preface the post - you know how the dashboard thing works - you see a picture first, and I'm hoping that when people see the red jar, they think 'great - another animation's arrived on the group blog...
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave :D
ReplyDeleteOh, oh. A bit of family rivalry is it Dave?
ReplyDeleteGorillaz are okay, but I think I prefer Hatsune Miku. I'd also say that the Miku one is more impressive in that the animations are more fluid (Clearly mocap). Though it's interesting that England did it first.
