Maya, why so Ugly? *help*

Hopefully a simple thing. BTW this has nothing to do with work or how maya operates but what it looks like:

I'm sure some of you don't see any problem. I can't stand the dark UI on maya 2011. I find its hard to see what buttons I've got pressed and I find that it slighty strains my eyes.
Is there a way to get it back to the old gray look?

  1. Firstly, I would advise against using Maya 2011 for the time being. University won't have it untill next year or so, you'll be struggling with compatibility issues should you need to open work at Uni, it's sods law that you will eventually have too and you'll be screwed.

Secondly, are you nuts? The Maya 2011 interface is amazing. I was so happy about the change. I find the grey kills my eyes, this was a refreshing relief for me. I'm having to force myself not to use it due to 'firstly'!

  3. I had to download Maya for a PC I was using this weekend, I quickly downloaded the 2011 trial and I really like the interface. Maya 2010 now seems a bit boring when I open it up. I've only noticed a few differences so far, such as assigning Materials a bit differently and some new stuff with layers, but what the hell Earl, the dark UI is delicious.

  4. Maya 2011 is slower, so i'm sticking with 2010 until uni updates

  5. Slower? I actually noticed a nice increase in performance. Thought you had some crazy PC too?

  6. The performance is defiantly better. Plus Jon is right, if your staring at Maya interface for hours on end, it can hurt your eyes. But the new dark colour is welcomed and I am a fan... I have started to use it and no problems so far. Added point, all of my plug-ins transfer with no problems

  8. i tried rendering the same scene exactly in the same place and render settings in mental ray on both and maya 2010 renders faster than 2011. my pc is pretty good though so i don't think thats the problem.

AMD Phenom II x4 3.2ghz processor
    8Gb of 1066mHz DDR2 ram
Gainward Geforce GTX 260 running at 1792MB
a power supply of 800watts to support it all

  9. Never miss a chance to ram your specs down our throats eh?

Regardless, I opened Kiiro Blades scene in 2011, textures all loaded, I can actually move around the scene freely. 2010 is just very slow and sluggish with the same file.

  11. The new color seems a bit pixologic and "omg nextgen!" but color has never been a big issue for me. I believe you can change to the good old 90s gray with mel though;

    "window -e -bgc 0.25 0.25 0.25 $gMainWindow"

Haven't tried it myself though so do so at own risk ;)

  13. Since autodesk overtaken Maya, then you can guess what the heck they will be doin with it.
Previous version of 3DMax has that similar themes. Yeah that's suck.
But internally animation in Maya has been the most miserable technology ever since.
    They never improve since after.
I use Maya for as long as i can remember because the modelling is perfect.
Yet most of the other things are pretty below standard.
