Bad News: my external hard drive

Yesterday when I was making the textures for my log my computer turned off. soon when it was able to turn on I inserted my external hard drive into my computer. when I accessed it to see if my files are okay, but it was not responding. suddenly my external hard drive is not working and I am very worried because all of my files are in there and I did not save them anywhere else.
If anyone knows a lot about computers please can you help me to try and reactivate my external hard drive or tell me where is the nearest computer repair shop.

  1. Shahbir - go and see Kevin in the technician's room at the far end of the CGAA corridor - take your external harddrive to him and see if there's anything he can do.

  3. Yeah that's probably best, here are some other options if that doesn't work either the power supply for your external HD is knackered in which case you can buy a replacement one on Ebay perhaps, If your HD doesn't have a external power supply by that I mean a plug then try swapping the usb cable with another one, if that doesn't work then you could open up the HD and buy a new external enclosure for it off Ebay for like £6 and that might fix if its a problem with the enclosure however failing that the hard drive is probably just broken but that rarely happens its more likely to be one of the other problems I mentioned, hope it helps

PS: Don't take it to a repair shop they will rip off trust me they will only do what I said above and then whack you with a bill for it and its not that hard to do...

  4. i suggest you remove it from the drive bay and connect it up directly to your motherboard then you should hopefully be able to back up the files, and maybe give it a re-format and re-insert into drive bay. it happened before to me and also raj and this seemed to do the trick.

  5. There is a really good pc shop in Strood called CYBER TECH. They're really friendly and extreemly helpful - they've dealt with every one of my computer/hardware problems.

They're situated on Darnley road by the mini round about. I've pasted a link to a map of where it is below :)
