John Lasseter - Advice for Aspiring Animation Students

I recently posted this on my blog, but I think its worth posting here too. Wise words from John Lasseter himself.

John Lasseter Q&A Any advice for aspiring animation student?

Comments

  1. ... for all those students who just think 'tutorphil' is an old fogey and the mantra of 'concept first, story first, design first' is just bloody mindedness on my part...

...for all those first years who are buried beneath 1,000 pages of hand-drawn anthropomorphism and can't remember why...

...for all those second years who are on the cusp of formulating their design identities, but might have lost their mojo for a while...

...for all those third years who kept being returned to the drawing board to better resolves their stories/art direction/design...

...for everyone on this course who dreams of making worlds and telling stories THEIR way...

    Thanks for posting, Leo!

(But I might re-think that shirt, Mr Lasseter...)

  5. Not at all, Jack - that wasn't my meaning - i meant 'i know it's frustrating sometimes, i know the work is hard and constant BUT do it, do it all, do it brilliantly!!!!'

  6. Hahahahaha Phil. You should have added a :

'MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHA' on the end there for extra effect!

  8. @ Jonny - is that a 'MWAH' - as in 'darling, Mwah, mwah!' or 'Evil laugh'?

    :-)

Hmmm - I fear my enthusiasm for John Lasseter's sound-byte is being misconstrued; if only there was a 'tone of voice' typeface!

For instance, the sentence "...for everyone on this course who dreams of making worlds and telling stories THEIR way..." isn't me saying you CAN"T do it your way, you have to do it OUR way (cue evil laugh) - it's me saying 'this is a course for people who want to do it all'! A course for people who will make worlds and telling stories their way BECAUSE they first acquired the fundamentals of good design, story-telling, film-making and animation.

So - to the first years who are burning the midnight oil getting their hand-drawn animations finished, I'm saying 'the effort is worth it'; to the second years who have their crit on Thursday, I'm saying 'I know it's been a slog, but the effort is worth it'; and to the third years who are so close to the finish line but who must be prepared for more feedback at their interim crit, I'm saying 'the effort is worth it'.

Put simply then - it's a great big 'mwah'! :-)

  9. You need more simple one-liners to avoid the confusion, Phil! (You literate bastard!) ;p

Like; "init Lasseter! Work pays lol!"

  10. Sebastian! :-) Abuse from a Finnish alumnus... You know, there is something disconcertingly 'Hannibal Lecter' about your blog icon... I hope all is well with you 'out there' - drop this 'literate bastard' a few lines and let me know how life is treating you...

Ps - I've thought about using 'lol' - but it feels like the equivalent of when your dad starts dancing at a wedding...

  11. HAHAH Phil. I love the analogy there! Brilliant.
I actually meant it as an evil laugh. But I like what you did with the "Great big MWAH!"
Reading the last few comments made me laugh!
