Feeling like a fool

My PC's been struggling all day rendering an ambient pass on my work wondering why it ws taking so long and in all honesty in terms of rendering and setting up renders I'm a novice and I stopped my render as I was just so fed up with it not doing anything. I then went through my render settings and I thought about lowering the quality of it in terms of picture resolution, but its just made me think I should have lowered the resolution instead of ripping the 2k maps off everything and now I really feel down as I feel like my works going to turn out so utter rubbish and be poor quality after all the work I've put into it. I'm concidering trying to re-render it, scrap all the ambient pass and shadow pass and just see how it goes with the 2k maps at a lower render resolution.
But in all honesty I just feel well lost with it all.
So i now feel like I've wasted my time as well as the processor power and use of the PC's at uni over the weekend as it's like I've wasted them.
I just feel so down about it all to be honest.

  1. I have to be honest James, I checked out your renders (I was being nosey) and you're rendering in 1080p, which is really unnecassery. I would be very suprised if anyone viewed it at those kind of resolutions. Actually, you should have rendered at 720p at most. Though I must admit, I was impressed with what you had come up with. If you just tone down your resolution and rethink some settings, i'm sure you'd be able to still render with time to spare.

  2. You know James it's not your fault. The way rendering is dealt with at this course is very strange. Nobody really talks about it so nobody thinks it's a big deal.

I have friends who do 3D courses in Germany and Belgium and they have things organised about rendering. There is information on how to render certain scenarios and there are timetables and you don't have to punch your fellow students in the teeth to get a spot in the render-sun. (Or race them to DM3... my god...)

Apart from that, I can only suggest that you don't throw away anything that's already rendered. Only add to it. Downscaling frame size in compositing programs is no issue at all.

  3. Pol & Jon,

Can you come and see myself or Phil regarding these issues. I am more than happy to help you, make space for you (more computers), inform you about progress of the render node, or refer you to MPW so you can talk to him.

As far as I was aware you hadn't started rendering yet and therefore other third years were told they could use more computers than usual (over the weekend only). If this was a problem on Friday (whatever time you came in and went?) you should have came and found me. Whether I was teaching or not.

The render node by no fault of our own was damaged (at Escape) and had to be fixed. It is now back and being installed. With the snow and Xmas being in the way this simply couldn't have happened any faster. Shouting about it or not.

I'm in tomorrow all day (monday) and will do all I can if you communicate with me. I'm going to state the word 'communicate' again...Before you put things into a public forum see us! If you have any further complaints can you use the proper proceedures or channels to do so.

    Thanks and see you tomorrow.
    Alan

  5. Hi Alan,

Our communication was a bit lapse with regard to when we would be rendering. We had hoped it would have been last Wednesday, but we had a lot of problems to resolve, so we didn't know when we would be ready either. We came in late Friday afternoon to begin, we had hoped to have seen you there, but I think unfortunately we just missed you. We'll certainly be in tomorrow though, so I am sure we will catch you there! :)

  6. I thought i posted this to my own blog but never mind :P
Cheers for the imput tho guys, all is on track now after chopping down the file size and upping the texture maps back up.
I've got 2 ambient occlusion passes pumped out as well as a beauty pass on one of the scenes, so one more ambient pass which is on the go but taking ages, then I've got a beauty pass for another scene crunching through rapidly on the higher spec'd PC's in the CG PC room. I've set up another beauty pass on one of the PC's in the base room but it seems to be lagging and after a few hours of nothing happening im guessing I'm going to have to wait until my other beauty pass (on the 64bit machine) is done and start the 3th beauty pass again on that.

    :)
