Merry Christmas from 'Tutor Phil' :-)

Looks like Christmas has started early - 'College closed'! I'll be checking in with your respective blogs over the festive period between mouthfuls of roast potato and pints of real ale. See you all on January 11th 2010! Have fun :-)

Hii

Does anyone know where I can get full versions of Maya 2010 and Photoshop CS3? I'm really fed up with trials. They cause so many deadline problems, and I cant find working programs anywhere!

Someone just brought this to my attention - apparently it was made for not very much money, and the director has just been signed to make a blockbuster in Hollywood - it would seem there's lots of ways to break into the big time - Youtube being one of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dadPWhEhVk Just goes to show you don't know who's browsing the internet - so keep your blogs bright and shiny and just keep creating amazing stuff!

NCLOTH - help!

I'm using ncloth for the first time for this project and im not quite sure how to create the arm ncloth component. I have a spring mechanism with the geometry wrapped around being ncloth which folds in and out when squashed and stretched but when i try to create the arms and constrain the ncloth transform controls it screws up the whole spring. i need the arms to 'flop' about rather than be solid as they are entirely made from cloth but as i already have the spring i don't know where to start ...im not sure how much sense that made but if anyone has any idea how to solve this problem then please let me know!! if print screens would help i can put some up heather

This week's movies...

As part of the first years' 'Environment' brief, I'll be showing Roman Polanski's Repulsion tomorrow (Dec 7th) in Lecture Theatre 2, starting at 11am, and the original The Stepford Wives in Lecture theatre 1 on Tuesday, starting at 2pm. Any second or third years who want to join, feel free to come along for some 'unhomely' cinema. See you there maybe.

How To: Bump Maps

I just commented this on someone's blog post, thought I'd make it fair and share it with everyone. This relates to greyscale bump maps in an example on a brick wall texture & its bump map. Bump maps work from difference between what's most dark and what's most bright. It often doesn't matter how high or low contrast your bump map is, but the bump node in maya is sensitive so you will always tend set it's bump depth value low. (Less is more in bump maps, Alan will say this.) Think of it as a height map. Dark goes in, bright sticks out, so if your bump has cement seams in between the bricks as bright areas, Maya will make them stick out in the render when actually it should be the bricks that stick out. (inverting your map sometimes helps to get started -> CTRL + i in PS) So the seams in between the bricks should be dark. They should be darker than any "noise" on the bricks themselves otherwise the noise will compete too much and obscure th

ISSUE

Hi Im not sure if this is a maya problem or a computer problem, (im hopeing maya). When doind render previews im only getting a blue render screen with error message "free memory is low. memory exception thrown" when trying to render bump map and light tests. is there a way around this problem in maya? any ideas?

Hi CG people - one and all! Thanks to Liam for setting up this 'central resource' - let's keep it positive and community-minded; if you want a whinge, do it elsewhere. With your help, this blog could become a very valuable 'skills & experience library' for all concerned! Here's to 'the co-operative'! :-)

Intro - Post your emails!

Hey all, I'm Liam, a third year student. Everyone is now using blogger on our course, and there's a nice community growing with people following each others blogs and helping each other with issues. Not everyone is linked up to each other though, and I thought a central blog for the course which everyone could post to would be a pretty nice idea. It would also mean that rather then relying on the slow blogfeed and having to surf through the 70 odd blogs that we have between us, we can just come straight to this one. With a large knowledge base between everyone a lot of issues could be resolved fairly quickly, and so any problems can be posted here, and we will all have quick access to them. Also if anyone has found any good tutorials, has started a new project blog, has had a breakthrough they're pleased with, or whatever else, they can whack it on here. Just put a subject in the post title ( eg . ISSUE - Blend Shapes, TUTORIAL - Advanced Rigging etc) and blog away. If you
