Retrofest 2011: Golden Turkey Awards: Chopping Mall (1986)

Chopping Mall (aka Killbots), described by one reviewer as 'Like Dawn of the Dead done by dorks', is a 1986 'spam in a can' flick directed by Jim Wynorski, in which a group of sex-obsessed teenagers are locked overnight in a shopping mall and hunted down by the mall's security robots.  It's an unlovely confection of nudity, 80's synth soundtrack, laser beams and exploding heads.  Jim Wynorski is an exploitation director of some note, with titles to his name such as The Bare Wench Project: Scared Topless, Scream Queen Hot Tub Party and the tv remake of The Wasp Woman...  Classy.

(Incidentally, the wart-riddled demon-hand on the film poster has nothing whatsoever to do with the film it's promoting...).  Anyway, another scuzzy b-movie of the 1980s for your consideration... and it's only going to get worse from here.

  1. You gotta love those synths! Also, I'd like to know where the snakes and creepy crawlies came from. Maybe the same place as the robot blood? :D

  2. I remember watching this as a teen - suckered in by that poster art - again! - and even then thinking 'these actors are soooo awful'. But these movies were what made the burgeoning home market for video rental seem so full of excitement and adventure - oh, the aching disappointment of it all, but hey, *Chopping Mall" - that's genius, right - you know, as in 'Shopping Mall'? Amazing, no, really...

  3. oh - the creepy-crawlies come from a pet shop, I seem to remember - you know, your average 'Tarantulas-R-Us' outlet...

  4. Ahhhh of course! I totally see what they did there with the shopping/chopping mall thing too, very clever stuff! :P

I think if we all successfully watch 'Troll 2' then we should definitely try and watch more of these films. They're just so much ridiculous fun! :D
