CGAA One-A-Day: Tchaikovsky - An Elegy (2011)

Another emotive stopmotion animation from Barry Purves for you, this time taking the composer, Tchaikovksy as its subject.  Again, what impresses is the theatricality of the staging of the story and the 'acting' of the puppet - emotive stuff.

CGAA One-A-Day: Next: The Infinite Variety Show (1989)

Next! Another masterful stopmotion animation from Barry Purves - this time a condensed précis of the plays of William Shakespeare summarised wordlessly by the playwright himself in an attempt to impress theatre director, Peter Hall .   What impresses is the visual shorthand and fluid transitions as the action is kept in constant momentum from one tableau to the next.

CGAA One-A-Day: Achilles (1995)

I'll be featuring a number of Barry Purves ' extraordinarily fluid stopmotion animations on here over the coming days, but I'm beginning with Achilles - which, in terms of homoeroticism and explorations of conflicted sexuality is provocative and bold.  Indeed, I should probably include a disclaimer here about   sexual content and 'watch something else if you're going to be offended', but hey, we're grown-ups.    Suffice to say,   Jason And The Argonauts  this is not!   Achilles is also fabulous to look at, with a stripped down, theatrical aesthetic and wonderfully expressive lighting.  The puppets themselves are stunning - as you'll see.
