The Old Curiosity Shop: Enfant Terrible, Jean Paul Gaultier

As the long Summer looms up it is important to stay creatively engaged. The Old Curiosity Shop is a weekly look at "interesting" stuff from a wide variety of creative industries that have the potential to influence design and creative thought.

We are starting with Jean Paul Gaultier's seminal and ground breaking fashion show from autumn 1995, this was a show that broke the mould of how a fashion show was perceived as well as Gaultier's joi de vivre is stamped throughout a show that also proudly proclaims  vive la différence.

Notice how themes and subjects that are still present today manifest themselves both in the commentary and also in the clothes and costumes themselves, gender fluidity, body image, technology, the influence and reference to history and even the seemingly increasingly ubiquitous face mask are present in Gaultier's oeuvre.

Also note how he pulls many different strings of experience together to weave the fabric of the collection, the ancient art of embroidery meets computer technology, ball gowns meet hairdryers and synthetic sports fabrics, all have been drawn together among many other elements to create a coherent whole.
